Having great fun J and may be able to stay one more week. Checking into that possibility. That would give me a chance to fish once again with the famous Mr. P. and it is always fun fishing with John. Sometimes he lets me cast first! And then, sometimes not!
Suitcase is a good choice for that fish. Massive in every area...huge width across the back!! I was shocked to pick him up!!
I'll be back to the same area tomorrow and will try to cast to some of the big boys again. I'm trying for the 20 pounder!! The Reel John Montana
I just found this blog so if I am out of line please just say so. I live in the Beaverton area and would like to find a place that has an abundant number of 2-10lb carp where I could take my kids fishing. (I would throw in some doughball for them while I prowled with a fly rod). Do you have any general (not asking for specific spots) suggestions. I do not want any special spots just some general pointers.
Up till now we have fished Mary S. Young park and the Tualatin River under the train tracks. These are good spots for the kids but not the fly rod. Thanks for any advice. Finally (as long as I am begging), I like to tie flies and was wondering if can you provide some details on your carrot fly? (Hook size, etc). It looks like the hackle is almost a Spey type hackle. Thanks for listening and tight lines!
John, I would suggest taking a walk along the Columbia slough. You will usually find some fish along the slough for the kids and the flyrod. The tualatin has carp but I have yet to find an area to sight fish for them. I would think the slough would be a good bet. Lots of carp with easy access. The carrot hackle is dyed partridge. I tie mine in about sizes 8 and 10. In the slough I would highly recommend rubber legged hares ears in sizes 10-14. I think that and a standard wooly worm type pattern would be more effective than the carrot in the slough. Good luck!
Thanks John! We go to the Tualatin to combine bass fishing and bottom fishing (I agree on the lack of sight fishing). The kids usually catch a lot of suckers and not as many carp as a matter of fact - not sure what that means. I have not tried the slough, I will have to do some investigating. I am a tiny bit concerned about the water quality with my 5 year old, but then again as a kid growing up in PA we used to carp fish in what was essentially a running sewer. The only permanent effect is that I still like to carp fish :)

That one should be dubbed "the suitcase." It's the word that came to mind when I saw your dad holding it. Wow. What a fish.
It begs the question: what's next?
I'm glad you and your dad are having a good time out there.
