Suggestions?

I have not one, but two wide open days this weekend. My wife and kids are going to MN and due to a business trip on Monday, I am staying behind. The silver lining is that I have Saturday and Sunday to fish.

I am coming to realize how out of touch I am with the local "regular" fishing world. I know I could hit the Deschutes, maybe the Metolius or poke around for winter steelhead, but overall...I am kind of at a loss. The crooked is a nice option since I could crash in a cheap hotel and get enough time in to make it worth the drive. Anyone have any suggestions for a guy that has gotten so lost in the carping world he owns no split shot and realizes he might actually have to buy some trout nymphs or steelhead flies?

Oh man they all sound like good options-- you could hit the metolius, stay the night in bend, and then hit the crooked.

I'm no expert on steelhead, but that would be my choice. I've only fished for steelhead once and still can't get them out of my head.

The met always kicks my butt, and yet there is something about that river. Especially when you can sight fish to some bulls.

I am just not much of a steelhead guy. They are cool and all, but I get bored swinging flies. I like to nymph for them though. We should have some fresh fish in the coastal rivers...admittedly intriguing.

Do something you couldn't do if you only had one day. It has been a long time since I fished the Crooked River. It was enjoyable.

I have been reading, and there are probably some WI Terri steelhead around, but that means there are probably people around! I could bust down to the crooked Saturday morning and then fish met for bulls on the way home.

Choices!

Panic. Seriously though, are there any saltwater options this time of year?

If you are allergic to people, you could go for surfperch. It's not prime season, but you can still catch them.

You should come fishing with Mark and I so I can convince you to take me out carping sometime!

Always wanted to catch a surf perch! Thus far the coast has defeated me.

Where are you guys going Tim? At this point, I think I will hit the crooked Saturday. LNG drive but it has been years since I have fished that river and it is a cool place. I will crash somewhere in madras or prineville and then fish either the middle d or the d around maupin Sunday. Tentatively...I have changed my mind three times today so who knows.

That steelhead allure is still tempting...but I have a hankering for some trout right now.

Not sure yet. Might just hit some private trout ponds, or might still chase steel. I you decide you'd rather stick around here and hit it let me know.

I may be lucky in having a spring influenced pond rather close, with carp active all winter, "active" being relative but I've caught them all months but December, and hope to kill that one soon. A trip 11/29 had more fish available than in summer trips though I did not do well. The water was 49F, it rarely gets below 40F here. I wish you success in what option you choose! I would, if I could, try surf perch, enjoying fishing on the esoteric side. Hey, I can't get your normal screen site with the 30 lb. plus carp, bummer. McTage quided me to access this another way. Good luck!
