Suck it Winter!

Granted, you have whipped my ass, causing borderline depression and forcing me to watch hours of Vimeo fishing videos, but today the sun broke through and the carp lit up the shallows. Lots and lots of carp.

Armed with the new Cheeky Mojo 425 I waylaid the fish. They ate the worm, they ate the hybrid, they ate the carp crust...they ate a lot.

The sun was high, so the fish were easy to spot and I got to make long casts and see nice head turns and white mouth takes. One fish in particular I stuck on a 70 foot cast from an elevated position. I love that Helios 2, and made a perfect cast at that distance and could clearly see the white mouth flare to set the hook. Just a great take on a fish I didn't think I had a chance of catching.

But it wasn't like I lacked for targets. There were fish all over the place, almost all tailing and feeding. All told, I landed 29 carp...crazy day for march around here. Thank you Mr. sun!

Today was a good day.

This makes me want to forget about these darn trout and go chase some carp! Someday I would love to have a double digit day of carping. This is the year, I know it! Now, to tie up some of those hybrids of yours.

Killing it, slowly, but surely! Awesome!

Good day indeed. Nothing like a great early season day to really start things up.

29! unreal... You have a nice set on that reel and rod. Great stuff.
I was lucky to this week, and landed my first carp for 2013 back in the Netherlands.

John, I have a question. I have seen a lot of youtube and Vimeo on flyfishing in America lately. Why do almost all fishermen in Amerika land a carp in such a small net? They all use a trout net or worse a pliers. In Europe it is common to use a carp net with an opening of 36 inch or bigger with a fine mesh and a foam for anti-sinking, just for propper carp care like this: http://www.gofishing.co.uk/upload/26046/images/ABU-net.gif. Is it about the mobility

Thight lines, Michael

I use the biggest net I can carry...in the summer I cover a lot of ground. No one should ever use a boga grip.

wow, cool report, John. I really need to start targeting these guys more (I say that every year)...I'm not done with the steelhead yet this year, but once I am...

Congratulations John!
That's what I want to hear, with my PDX visit still 6+ weeks away, there seem to be some Carp in my near future.

Okay John, you've drug me over to the dark side. Can I at least wait until the weather warms up a bit before I jump in?

I was happy with the one fish I landed in four outings this March until I read this! Good stuff.

Hah..Brent, that is what I was thinking as I laid the smack down on the fish. Winter can suck it!

Howard, it is still way early out here...I flat out got lucky. Normally I wouldn't get real jacked up about things until may, but it has been a long winter.

Miles, you have lake MI! One of the best resources on the planet for carp! Love that place...will be out there at some point this year I think.
